92 g fat (22.5 g saturated, 2 g trans)
2620 mg sodium
Fat accordingly: As eating 4 Dunkin Donuts cheese danish!

It is difficult to do NOK argument for a cheese Danish, but four? And we're only talking fat here-with more than 800 calories of things in just one sandwich. You also fill up with more than a day's worth of sodium and saturated fat. Although this is one of the worst you could choose, the rest of Quizno menu also has risks. But if colleagues insist on eating there, order:

410 calories
17 g fat (2.5 g saturated)
1230 mg sodium
Chili's

Crazy Sweet Chile glazed Chicken Crisp
1930 calories
112 g fat (17 g saturated)
4190 mg sodium
Calorie equivalent: Like eating an entire medium Pizza Hut 12 "pepperoni pizza!

If you have time for a sit-down meal, you have the time to think through. Chicken Crisp is fun, but accounts for almost a whole day's worth of calories and almost two days worth of sodium. Your smarter option is to eat this instead:

Classic Chicken fajitas

370 calories
11 g fat (1.5 saturated)
2000 mg sodium

1048 mg sodium
Dairy QUEEN

3050 mg sodium
Fat accordingly: By eating 6 slices of Papa John's cheese pizza!

You were on the right track in selecting Breaded, but not be sidelined by the lure of the Italian Combo. Ciabatte bread may sound advanced, but you will not look as refined as you lugging that spare Pirelli around the midsection.

Down to drop pounds.

Eat this instead:

2770 mg sodium
Saturated fat equivalent: Like eating 43 strips of Oscar Mayer bacon!

It is called the Monster for a reason. It is a monster load of saturated fat (more than two days left). The good news is that it has a friendlier, healthier cousin in 1/3-lb Low-carb Thickburger, with 1,000 fewer calories and a third the amount of fat. Even better, the Low-carb Thickburger is true of the name it has only 5 grams of quick-burning carbohydrates, compared with 46 grams of Monster.

1/3-lb Low-carb Thickburger

420 calories
32 g fat (12 g saturated)
1010 mg sodium

Choose a regular cheeseburger instead and slash 920 calories, 68 g of fat, and save yourself from the judgmental stares of your colleagues, which is three times as likely to be grossed out!

Eat this instead:

Cheeseburger

330 calories
16 g fat (7 g saturated 0.5 g trans)
780 mg sodium

Can liquids still make you fat?

Did you know that a latte consumption from Monday to Friday each week, could lead to weight gain of 14 pounds in a year? I know this is surprising, but the reality of liquid calories.

If you drink soda, juice or lattes, keep in mind those liquid calories do not make you feel full and will not help reduce the number of calories you eat your next meal. There is no question, even if the calories you have a few minutes before eating. They are simply adding to the total number of calories you eat in one day.

How important is this weight gain? Well, more than 20 percent of the calories you consume are liquids. Take a look at the label and see how many drinks contain calories. How many calories you consume over what you eat?

There is one exception to this rule. Beverages that contain a minimum of 20 grams of protein to decrease your appetite. My team and I created a high protein, ready-to-drink shake that we have our clients use for breakfast, snacks or meals, sometimes when they can not get good food. We found that the earthquake which provides satiety as needed. The next time you take a drink, ask yourself this: What is liquid high-protein calories that you drink to help give you a chance to share your next meal?

The key to losing weight

The research, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) National Institutes of Health, seems to argue against the use of the coverage schemes that do not necessarily limit the calories, but call for the consumption of certain foods such as vegetables or proteins, to the detriment of others.

The NIH study of 811 volunteers, 38 per cent of men and 62 percent of women 30-70 years and overweight or obese, reviewed the plans that were popular in the United States in recent years, when well as the number of obese Americans has soared.

The "Prevention of overweight and using new feeding strategies (POUNDS LOST) study showed a weight loss even after six months and two years among participants assigned to four diets that differ in their proportions of the three major nutrients "said the researchers.

"The plans with low or high in total fat (20 or 40 percent of calories) with a medium or high protein (15 or 25 percent of calories). Carbohydrate varies from 35 to 65 percent of calories.

"The schemes all used the same objectives of reducing calories and heart healthy, low in saturated fat and cholesterol while high in fiber," said the researchers, whose study is published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Participants lost an average of 13 pounds (5.9 kilos) in six months and maintained a nine pounds (four kilograms) of the loss of two years.

"These results show that, as long as people follow a heart healthy diet reduced in calories, there are more of a nutritional approach to achieve and maintain a healthy weight," said Dr. Elizabeth Nabel, director of NHLBI.

"This gives people who need to lose weight with the flexibility to choose an approach that they are more likely to support: that is most suited to their personal preferences and health needs," she underlined.

Sixty-six percent of American adults are overweight and of these, 32 percent are obese, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

When treatments go bad - at medi spa

In the medi-spa

Problem spot: Injections

In 2006, a woman in Salinas, California, died after receiving injections of Botox false (it was cooking oil) from a barbershop, which was not authorized to make the treatment, the stylist was later accused of causing death.

Although serious side effects of cosmetic injections are extremely rare, counterfeit products have caused the most serious problems. "It's a big problem, because there are only a cosmetic Botox is currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but there are many false and cheaper foreign products", said in July Few, MD, spokesman for the American Society for Plastic Surgery Aesthetics and director of the Institute of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Few in Chicago. "When considering a cosmetic filler, it is extremely important to make sure you are getting something that is approved by the FDA."

There can be problems even with Botox: If diluted before being administered properly, their effectiveness may be reduced. "Botox comes as a powder and mixed with a saline solution, so it may be overdiluted for someone trying to stretch the benefits," said Bruce Cunningham, MD, director of the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Minnesota . "I've heard patients say, 'The Botox at the spa have lasted only three months instead of the usual six." This may be because it is diluted. "

Cosmetic injections are considered extremely safe, but can cause side effects such as pain, redness, lumps and bumps. Most are temporary, but some, such as droopy eyelids and a frozen expression, which can occur with Botox, can be disturbing. "A sub --
dynamics of facial anatomy, which make the muscles when to talk and express their emotions, can make the difference between a natural looking result and something that is just bizarre, "said Richard D'Amico, MD, president of the Society American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "The more you get from a plastic surgeon or dermatologist in the office, the more likely you are to have fewer people with no knowledge or experience of doing the procedure."

Protect yourself

Make sure your initial appointment with a doctor. A nondoctor can not know the pros and cons compared to that of Botox fillers that work better, said Alan Gold, MD, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Check the credentials, training and experience of the person performing the injection. (In one state, a physician assistant with a day of training may be licensed.) Someone with experience in cosmetic know that hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Juvederm, for example, can be dissolved by injecting a substance called hyaluronidase if something goes wrong, they'll also know that some people are allergic to hyaluronidase.

Care prices that sound too good to be true. According to a recent analysis in the Wall Street Journal, the average price is $ 363 Botox, injectable fillers range from about $ 390 for collagen to $ 557 for Restylane, a hyaluronic acid. The prices can be much higher in urban areas, however.

Watch the product, "says Dr. Gold: Make sure the package is unopened and brand name and manufacturer are the same as what was promised. Allergan, for example, has created a hologram on its packaging to thwart counterfeit Botox.

Discover the spa for emergency procedures. "You should know what can go wrong and how fast you can get a doctor," says Hannelore Leavy, executive director of the International Medical Spa Association and the Association of Day Spa.

Ask about the training. With new products such as Botox-expected to reach the market in the next year, the situation will soon become more complicated. "All new products disperse in different tissues, so that each one will have to inject a little different," says Dr. D'Amico. "The people carrying out these procedures will need to understand the differences."

When treatments go bad - at hair salon

At the hairdresser

Problem spot: chemicals and relaxers

In 2007, doctors at Chicago L. Sumner Koch Burn Center reported that one couple had received chemical burns to more prominent in the local saloon. She was hospitalized and received skin grafts and was left with two 3 cm bald patches on top of his head.

While this type of serious injuries are rare, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that Straighteners and hair dyes are among the top consumer complaints and can cause itching all, the raw skin of difficulty breathing. "I've had patients who have had allergic reactions, and their faces swollen eyelids or break in the lounge after the hives, hair treatments," says Dr. Dele.

Protect yourself

If you feel a burning sensation on the scalp as you color your hair, your stylist alert and flushing of chemicals possible. Also, make sure your technician is paying attention when carrying hot blow dryers, hair curlers and irons.

"Ask your stylist of any evidence of chemicals in his elbow the day before reaching their hair to make sure that you are not allergic," says Dr. Dele.

When botox and treatments go bad - at nail salon

In the nail salon

Problem spot: Foot spa

There is nothing more relaxing foot soak in a hot tub, bubbling water or is there? In 2000, 110 women who had pedicures in the same room northern California were infected with a nasty bacteria, Mycobacterium fortuitum, some of the dozens of women have been found in boiled and antibiotics for months. Later, scientists from the Department of Health in California from 30 swabs whirlpool foot spas are 18 nail salons across the state and found potentially dangerous bacteria in all but one.

Since then, California has required nail salons specific procedures for cleaning and disinfection of foot spas, but not all states have the same requirements and not all classrooms follow the rules. In fact, 27 classrooms in California were put on probation for violations foot spa in the first six months of 2008 alone, said Kevin Flanagan, spokesman for the California Office of barbering and cosmetology.

Another foot-spa concerns, fungal infections and warts. "They spread the skin moist," says Carolyn Jacob, MD, director of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology.

Protect yourself

Wash your hands and feet with antibacterial soap before any procedure, ask your technician to wash their hands.

Ask to see the foot spa cleaning, said Flanagan. Halls with the highest standards of drainage of all water, waste scrub the walls and run a cycle of disinfectant for 10 minutes between each client-a procedure that is particularly important for older machines pipes that can hold water, a haven for bacteria. Many classrooms are going to pipeless foot spas, which have no place for water and bacteria to build, as it still should be disinfected between customers and the end of the day, and screens filter must be removed and cleaned regularly.

Do not shave your legs the day of your pedicure because even a small cut can provide an entry point for bacteria and other infections caused by tiny bugs. "See a doctor if you have a suspicious spot that does not go away or gets worse after a pedicure," says Oliver Zong, NYC a podiatrist. If your aesthetician has a cut on his hands, to change your appointment, ask a technician, or ask you to wear gloves, a practice that some salons use automatically.

Problem spot: Mani orders and instruments

You do not stick with an instrument at home without making damn sure it was clean, so do not let anyone work on the nails do not. The most dangerous tool in the classroom is the creed of the blade, razor-like device that uses a face to shave calluses. It's illegal in most states, but pedicurists violate the rules, as Stacy Nartker, 25, of Kalida, Ohio, discovered when receiving an inch long Gash's standing sheet Creed. "I did not need stitches, but around hampered by a few days later," she said.

Nartker been easy, as the inspector Jacobs. "People have had a manicure tendons cut because shaving, while one fell callus on the heel," he says.

Even the legal instruments such as cuticle cutters and scissors, have the potential to transmit staph infections, hepatitis B and C, and, yes, HIV even if they are contaminated with microscopic drops of blood from an infected person, says Sonia Badreshia - Bansal, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in Danville, California. Much more common for serious errors are annoying, such as fungal infections that can be picked up from contaminated instruments, files, brushes, tools and cuticle. "The best way to deal with fungus is a topical antifungal cream, but some require a prescription-strength oral medication," he says.

Protect yourself

Ask how the salon disinfect its instruments. The device is a more foolproof autoclave, which sterilizes metal instruments overnight. At a minimum, tools must be disinfected between customers, but should be washed in soapy water, then soaked in disinfectant in a covered container. "The solution should read bactericidal, fungicidal, germicidal, virucidal or in it," said Flanagan. Cleaning tools should be stored separately from used. Items that can not be disinfected nail-buffer-blocks, nail brush, emery boards, should be discarded immediately after being used. To be supersafe, bring your own.

Just say no to knife cutting tip and cuticle cutters. "Use of a Credo blade is actually considered minor surgery is not something you want done in a nail salon," Dr. Sekula-Gibbs said. It is easy to cut the skin with cuticle cutters too. "Cuticles actually serve an important purpose, providing a protective barrier to the germs that may seep under the nails with water and cause an infection," he explains. If your cuticles are too long, have the aesthetician gently push back, or do it yourself at home with your own tools.

Manis and pedis Avoid if you are diabetic or if your immune system is compromised because of chemotherapy or a recent episode of a serious illness such as breast cancer. "You're much more susceptible to any kind of infection if your immune system is not working well," says Vincent Dele, MD, chief of dermatology at St. Luke's Hospital, Roosevelt Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center.

Diseases that attack women and men differently (2)

Heart disease and heart attacks
Did you know? Only one third (36 percent) of Canadian women are aware that the sudden pain in the chest, arms, neck, jaw or back are not always the most common symptoms that a woman suffers a heart attack.

Fact: 43 percent of women report unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting during a heart attack - no chest pain.

Women need to understand that they are more likely to have atypical symptoms of a heart attack than men, says Dr. Martin, who notes that some people with diabetes may have a heart attack and not even know it. It is therefore important for people with diabetes to hit their targets for blood sugar and control cholesterol.

Furthermore, according to the heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women.

Women can be completely asymptomatic, as the disease of clogged heart arteries, says Dr. Martin. If you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and if you smoke, are overweight and sedentary, which is in danger and need to talk to your doctor says.

Depression
Did you know? 61 per cent of women are not aware that the number of men and women who experience depression in their lives is not the same.

Fact: Research shows that women are twice as likely as men to experience depression.

According to the Center for Addiction and Mental Health, "Many hormonal factors may contribute to increased rates of depression in women - especially in times such as changes in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and postpartum, miscarriage, pre-menopausal and menopause. "

Research shows that exercise is a great antidepressant. "Studies show cardiovascular exercise can greatly improve the morale of people," says Dr. Martin. "I encourage people prone to depression to maintain a regular, routine and predictable."

It is also important that women talk to their doctors about their symptoms so they can seek appropriate treatment. For more information about depression, visit the Center for Addiction and Mental Health website.

Arthritis
Did you know? Nearly half (45 percent) of women do not know more women suffer from arthritis than men.

Fact: Two thirds of Canadians living with arthritis are women. And women are twice as likely to be disabled by arthritis than men.

"People often remove the pain and discomfort and pain of aging," says Dr. Martin. A common misconception is that osteoporosis and arthritis have a connection. Arthritis is not normal and a woman who suffers from any pain you should visit your doctor.

Although there is no cure for arthritis, may slow down by staying active and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Diseases that attack women and men differently (1)

Some say that women are very conscious of their bodies. We know we must go to the doctor for our annual physicals and Pap tests to rule out X, Y and Z. However, a recent health survey called the Women's College Hospital for X-Effects of Health Index shows that many women do not understand enough about how chronic illness and disease could affect them.

Disease gender gap
"When it comes to health, women and men are not the same," said Marilyn Emery, CEO of Women's College Hospital in Toronto. "[The study], we wanted to know how well they understand that Canadian women symptoms, diagnoses, treatments and medications may be different because of their gender."

The study revealed that women need access to more information about chronic illnesses and diseases so that they can take charge of your health and adjust their lifestyles accordingly.
Talk to your doctor
If only the head to the doctor when something is wrong, may be losing importance in health care. Dr. Danielle Martin, a family physician at Women's College Hospital, recommends participation in what doctors refer to as self-care and self-management. This means taking proactive steps to maximize their health between appointments. "The doctor is not just a place to go when you are sick, it's a place to go for a good lead," he says.

That is not to be bombarded with questions to your doctor about every major disease, but to understand their risk of disease depending on their age, family medical history and lifestyle. Then you can concentrate on getting answers that address their main concerns.

Women's Health Matters The site offers 10 questions that women should talk with their doctors on the basis of relevance to their lives.

How can I take charge of my health?
To improve your overall health, take measures to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes exercise, enough sleep and having a balanced diet. "Those kinds of things can go a long way," says Dr. Martin.

Dr. Martin proactive measures for women's health include:

-Regular screening and prevention of common diseases
-A mammogram every one or two years after the age of 50 years
The colon cancer screening every one to-two years after the age of 50 years
-Regular Pap tests
-Having adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D for osteoporosis
Vaccines-day

These are some of the diseases and illnesses that you may want to talk to your doctor if you feel you may be at risk.

Diabetes
Did you know? About half (48 percent) of women surveyed think men and women are experiencing the same increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes.

Fact: Women between the ages of 20 and 50 are experiencing the greatest increase in the incidence of diabetes.

There are several risk factors that can determine whether a woman can get type 2 diabetes, including genetic factors and certain lifestyle choices. While nothing can be done about the genetic factors, according to the Canadian Diabetes Association, scientists believe that lifestyle changes can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Examples of lifestyle changes include:
-Exercise and physical activity
-Maintain a healthy body weight
-Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and low in sugars and processed foods

Women who have had gestational diabetes are also at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Why Hair Goes Gray

25 February 2009 - May scientists understand why hair turns gray, and their finding May opened the door to new anti-aging.

New research shows that the hair turns gray because of a chemical that causes the chain reaction of hair bleach from himself inside.

The process starts when there is a dip in levels of an enzyme called catalase. Catalase This deficit means that the hydrogen peroxide that occurs naturally in the hair can not be broken. Thus, hydrogen peroxide accumulates in the hair, and because other enzymes repair the damage that would be hydrogen peroxide are also short of supply, the hair is gray.

To halt the chain reaction of the chemical "could have repercussions in the gray-haired man scenario," write the researchers, who included Karin Schallreuter, clinical professor of dermatology and experimental of England at the University of Bradford.

The study appears online in the FASEB Journal, FASEB Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
